I'm sorry you're struggling that much and wish I could help... Is it "Tinnitus" in German?
Tönen
Wow, and people say German has long words... ;-)
For your German trivia: "Tönen" is related to "(der) Ton," which means "sound" (the noun). "tönen" is the verb, "to sound," and "(das) Tönen" is the noun made out of that verb (kind of like "to eat" being transmorphed into "the eating").
The only time I have ever heard "tintinnabulation" actually used is in Edgar Allan Poe's poem, The Bells. But once heard, never forgotten.
Thanks for the explanation. I guessed it was some form of Ton (sound) but I usually check to be sure because sometimes I'm surprised. I thought I could guess what Phantombild meant, but I was wrong.
But why would Phantombild appear in your essay?
"Der Beginn europäischen Komponierens in der Karolingerzeit: Ein Phantombild"
