I know it is Mother’s Day, but my today was a mini-Christmas for me. We didn’t sing any Christmas songs in church, but not a one made me giggle. The sermon was simple but direct and sometimes that’s the best way to hear God’s call. The Lord calls me back from my idolatry every Sunday, and this Sunday was blessedly no exception. It is always such a joy to enter the week reunited with Jesus. I keep praying I fall away less and less!
After lunch with the gang I walked to Catharine’s and she welcomed me into her home. It was so lovely to chat with her and her roommate. The excuse for visiting was that they had a bike I could borrow for my time here. She even had a helmet for me. Ah! What pleasure to be on wheels again with the breeze blowing back my hair! It’s a bit of a putt-putt bike, but this beggar won’t be a complainer. It was a nice joy-ride home. I pretty much went right back out and biked to Valda’s, but I messed it up and took the long way around. It wasn’t as scary biking in town as I thought, and I’m seeing the streets in a whole new way. . .
I had a lovely few hours at Valda’s despite the fact that she had tons of work to do. We had a quick dinner and I yapped at her most of the time but she seemed to enjoy it. Then we let me go through some clothes of hers, which was the excuse for the visit. I’d failed to pack enough summer stuff and had sent out a plea for old clothes, and a number of people helped. I probably have more than I need but not more than I’ll use. Perhaps the biggest Christmas present of all was not having to go clothes shopping . . . Thankfully Valda understood that sentiment. She’s a great gal and she called me on a number of things I said that weren’t quite true. Perceptive and friendly. I hope I get more time with her.
The sun tricked me again and I stayed until 9:40. I just can’t get over how my body won’t get tired when it’s just an hour after dark. The bike back only took half an hour (even though I walked some spots to be on the safe side) because I went the right way. Freedom! Now I get to explore the area! I’m excited. I like walking, but it’s not so good for wandering around and exploring a larger area. I enjoyed my exploratory bike rides in Japan so much I’m very much looking forward to doing the same in Basel. I am out of shape for being in the saddle, though . . .
Here’s a big thanks to all people who do random things to help random people. It’s appreciated!
And I didn’t forget to call my mommy on Best Friend’s Day . . .
And did this mommy appreciate hearing from two WONDERFUL daughters, who so often seem to be on the same phone schedule even though they are six hours apart. :)
I love the fact that not going clothes shopping is a good thing to you! I can't exactly say I feel the same way.
(I also love the way such (relatively) small things make you so happy!)
Mom said that Ben and I also seem to be on the same schedule: I called 10 seconds after they hung up yesterday.
Which really means we're all on the same schedule, since (at least if you did what Heather expected) you called your mom right after Heather and I hung up because Janet had just called in....
An explanatory note to "I yapped at her most of the time but she seemed to enjoy it:" Last time Valda and I hung out she talked about as much as I did and put it down to being in a talkative mood. So don't feel bad.
And I second all your comments about her and the Bläserstrasse duo.
Mom, Andy, Stephan. Thank you.
