I know you are hoping for the story of my adventure in Graubünden, but this is on my mind.  I am the first to admit my ignorance of world events and slowly I’m trying to change that.  It means not always doing my German homework (gasp!) and sorting through loads of completely contradictory information.

I’ve passively believed the general murmur the media dishes out even though I’ve learned that they get something important wrong every time they report on something I have first hand information on.  Still, I’m not sure what to think after reading many convincing articles debunking those popular beliefs.  It appears I can trust no one, but must read many sources and sort through it myself.  That’s a daunting task but I’m beginning to find a few helpful sources.  If you know more about current events than I do (which should cover just about all of my readers), please comment (or send a private email) with your favorite source(s) for news.  I’m not looking for one “unbiased” source, for I don’t think that’s possible, but for a few logical, reasonable sources that believe their audience has some amount of intelligence.

This is a rather strange introduction to the topic of this post.  I suppose I am the last to hear about “Infidel” by Ayaan Hirsi Ali.  She was “born into a family of desert nomads, circumcised as a child, educated by radical imams in Kenya and Saudi Arabia, taught to believe that if she uncovered her hair, terrible tragedies would ensue.”  She escaped and now needs bodyguards as she moves about in America speaking her message that Islam is not a peaceful religion.  I also enjoyed her radio interview with Laura Ingram. What she has to say reminds me of what a member of the church I grew up in had to say about Islam.  He grew up in Iran and after much study rejected Islam and became a Christian.  After meeting resistance in college for quoting him saying that Islam is fundamentally a violent religion I stopped talking about it.  I am ashamed that I doubted the word of an experienced man I knew personally to be full of integrity because my comfortable American friends claimed they knew otherwise.  There is a lot of shrinking I did in college that I pray God will redeem.

I haven’t done much research on this book, but I want to read it.  At least it will be a good start to trying to understand one view on a complicated issue by someone who has been there.

Another book to read, which I'm embarrassed to admit I've only read parts of so far, is Answering Islam: the Crescent in Light of the Cross.  I have reason to expect it to be (1) from a Christian point of view, (2) knowledgeable of Islam and respectful of Muslims, and (3) intellectually honest.  I'll let you know more after I've read it completely.
