I guess I’m getting older. My birthday snuck up on me and passed without any great fanfare. Of course, I did celebrate when Mom and Dad were here, so I guess it’s to be expected. It was also the first day of school so everyone at school was busy and had other things to worry about. However, I got calls from the states and Nikko dropped by to give me flowers. The next day Michiko brought flowers to church for me and Mark and Megan gave me chocolate and stationary items. But back to Friday, April 7th. I fixed buckwheat pancakes from the mix Mom and Dad gave me for my birthday and ate it with the maple syrup they also gave me. Yum! I felt like a queen. It was quite a nice start to the day.

Like I said before it was the first day of school so we had the opening ceremony and no classes. I can’t figure out why half of the stuff is the way it is, but this was a ceremony for returning students only. They were introduced to the new teachers and principle and their new homeroom teachers were announced. It was good to see them all again! I also had a misconception straightened out. I thought that ichinensei wore green (shoes, gym clothes, etc.), ninensei blue, and sanensei red, but that’s not true. I thought it would be exciting for the students to move up to the next color like it’s exciting for them to move from the fourth floor ichinensei rooms to the third floor ninensei classrooms. However (and I have to admit it makes a lot more sense), each class keeps its color and the new ichinensei take the color of the graduating sannensei. This isn’t particularly crucial information, but I wonder what other misconceptions I’ve formed buy observing and guessing why things are the way they are.

Anyway, I prepared for class and chatted with students left on time to enjoy my birthday evening. I had a hankering for okonomiyaki for dinner so I went to the local produce stand and bought the fixings. Yummy, was that good! So, it was a good day, but it didn’t have the birthday charm that birthdays do when you’re little. I guess I’m finally growing up!
