This week I let work consume me, but it wasn’t all that exhausting. But fist I’ll talk about Monday Bible study. The Brown’s are very busy so for a time we’re meeting at Denver’s place, which is in my side of Kofu. I don’t know him well because when I started coming to church he was busy preparing for his wedding then they were away for a few months. He seems like an interesting guy and Bible study sure was interesting this time! We abandoned our script and got into a discussion of some deep theological issues. Of course that thrilled me and to my delight it excited most of the other people in the study. At least for the time the Brown’s are taking a break we’ve decided to make Bible study a really deep, tough search into God’s word. I’m very excited because there group is very diverse in their views and very knowledgeable as well. I pray that we will sharpen each other’s understanding and grow in love and grace as we struggle with hard issues. Prayers for the group would be most appreciated. I’m very excited!

It was a busy week of school because though I planned the semester I hadn’t made all the handouts for it or given much thought to my OC III class. I managed to keep up at least, though some projects got put on the back burner. I’ve also been helping the ten finalists of the recitation contest prepare for the final round of the competition. It’s been nice to have individual time with the students after school. Of course, some are not so interested in the contest, but I understand that. I was also able to talk to a few students about school and life and such, which was also rewarding. I’ve got to find a way to be with the students more, and I have to learn Japanese!!! Picking up the language tapes has been helping a lot even though I’ve only been back into it for a week or so. They tapes are meant for middle aged men coming to Japan on business trips so I learn some pretty random vocabulary and it’s also the formal way of speaking which makes people laugh at me when I say something (though at least they understand) and it makes it hard for me to understand my students because they’re using different words. There are enough similarities and connections, however, to make it helpful still. I just wish they sold a “casual Japanese” Pimsleur method.

Monday, Jan. 2 was a holiday so I took the opportunity to sleep and soon after I woke up it started snowing! This was the first snow that I’ve seen, and they were big flakes that melted upon hitting the pavement. I heard the snow stuck where there was earth, but there isn’t much of that around me. I had a relaxing day studying German, reading, and enjoying my last day of break, or so I thought.

Dec. 26, 2005

I slept in again and it was a beautiful, warm (relatively) day. I hung my futon and washed my sheets. There was a stiff breeze, so my bed will be nice tonight!

I did some much neglected cleaning and Megan came over to use my shower since her pipes broke on Christmas day. I’ll think I’ll leave my pipes dripping from now on . . .

In the evening I went to Adden’s for dinner. Adden is from China and is studying at the university where New Life International church meets (Eiwa). He was a chef in China, so it was a very good meal! We talked and watched a movie. Apparently homeschooling is legal in China, though it is not very common. Who would have thought? (More)
