Thursday, Nov. 17th I went out to dinner after school with Megan Walton, a JET (not a first year) who lives in a nearby town. We went to Denny’s. Yes, that’s right. Japan has Denny’s, but they don’t serve what Denny’s does back home. It’s mostly Japanese food, though I did get a nice chocolate sundae!

Friday night there wasn’t time to do anything special because I had to work on Saturday. Since high school is not compulsory in Japan there is a mini process like applying to college that Jr. high school kids do for high school. We had school on Saturday so the Jr. high kids could see the school. As each group passed my office I introduced myself and asked “How are you?” The response, of course, was always the one phrase in English that everyone in Japan knows “I’m find thank you, and you?” Ah, gotta love it.

Oh, so I guess I’m already talking about Saturday (Nov. 19th). It was actually quite hard to have a six day work week and I was so ready to get out of there after school ended. We had ICC (English club), though, so that kids could observe it. I did my Irish music and dance presentation (I wish I had brought my shoes – what was I thinking?) and the kids had a lot of fun with that. I was very grateful that clubs started an hour earlier because 6th period was cut. That meant I had time to clean up after my presentation and catch the train for church.I was certainly discombobulated because usually after ICC I race to the train station to catch the 5:45 train for Bible study and this time I was racing from ICC to catch the 5:45 for church. I kept thinking I was going to Bible study . . .

Anyway, church was a blessing, as usual, and I was grateful that I could make it. We went to dinner at Grazie Gardens (but the Japanese pronounce it “grachia”) and I’m not sure if something in the food got to me or what, but afterwards I felt quite weak and sick. I stayed the night in Kofu at Courtney’s since I had to be at Kofu station at 6:40. I was grateful that she took me in because I went right to bed and was feeling feverish and queasy. Why do I always get sick before weekend trips? This is the third time. I think being able to get more sleep by crashing at Courtney’s really helped because by morning I was feeling better and after the walk to the train station I was even better. I was a bit queasy on the bus, but a pit stop for breakfast helped that. The rest of the trip I was fine! I hope to write about it soon, right now I have to go to work.

"I wish I had brought my shoes – what was I thinking?" -- maybe that you didn't have ROOM to bring your shoes? "Why do I always get sick before weekend trips?" Sounds like the "Indian Princess effect" kicking in....

Maybe, but I should have brought things that I can't get here. I brought too many things that I wasn't sure if I could get them or not due to the scares of other JETs. I guess you never know, but Japan has just about everything you really need. I just didn't think I'd use my use - where would I have the space? Maybe you're right about the sickness, though it's usually been like a head cold as well. I'll have to not be so excited next time and try it.
