I made it! The whole trip was not without adventure, the most of which happened on the way to NYC, but none the less, I made it and as far as I can tell all my stuff did too. The flight was not the greatest, though service was great and the food wasn't bad. The seats were about the smallest I'd ever seen and we didn't have personal TV screens or moving headrests. The first and the third conditions made it impossible for me to sleep so I spent the time crocheting (no problem with the crochet needle and security). Anyway, I can tell I am being random, which is understandable since I've been up 23 hours. I am in the hotel in Tokyo using their free dial up. :) It's 8pm (7am for those at home). We were chasing the sun and had light the whole flight!

I plan to post details, but we got a ton of information and materials upon check in and I need some time to sort it out before orientation starts tomorrow. They process worked like clock work. We got off the plane and did all the customs stuff then there were JETs in orange T-shirts the whole way to the bus, including a stop for sending luggage on to our prefectures. The buses ran continually so I only sat on it for 5min before we were off. The 2 hour ride seemed short compaired to the flight. When we arrived we were greated by hotel staff and our luggage was taking to the 4th floor for us. We then picked up name tags, JET bags, country specific information packets, then our room keys and were pointed to the elevators. All the while there were three or four people at one place greeting us and showing us the way. When I got to my hotel room I almost didn't know how I got there or what to do with myself. Then I found the free internet . . .

Randome ovservation #1: On first glance, Tokyo and the Narita airport look like any other city.

Random observation #2: I'm a giant! The bathroom has a low celling, counter, and toilet and I fell like I'm at the Maggie P.!

Random observation #3: Alaska isn't always covered in snow. I was able to get a few glances outside when we were over the northern part of Alaska and it was very brown. Maybe I should have known that . . .

Random observation #4: The great thing about a blog is that if you forget an important detail because you're out of it, someone can ask for it in a comment and then it's there for all to see!

I need to get back to organizing for tomorrow. I love you all, and thanks so much for your prayers! The trip here was almost as uneventful as it could possibly have been.

Thanks be to God! Congratulations! I laughed aloud at the Maggie P. comment.:)

What about the luggage situation in Tokyo? Were you able to keep your carry-on?

Get on IM SursumCorda! I decided to take my oboes and backpack out of my carry-on and send it on. I also put some stuff that was in my large suitcase in there so I wouldn't have so much to carry. I'm glad I did. At the hotel I have a large suitcase, an oboe/English horn bag, a computer backpack with baroque oboe, purse, and a bag of goodies that you send me off with. I didn't quite finish my crochet bag . . .

Praise God! It's funny you mention feeling like a giant. I had the opposite experience as I got to sit on a 12-row regional jet yesterday with a football team on the way to Lincoln....get some sleep!

OK I totally know what you mean about the Japanese bathrooms!! The size of the bathtub in my hotel room when I was there (1978)...and I was MUCH smaller then...required me to bend my knees if I were to recline in the tub...oxymoron there as you would NOT be able to recline in the tubs there unless you were ...say...3 years of age! I loved the gardens around my hotel...loaded with Japanese gold-fish, hope you enjoy them too. Did I ever tell you that when I was young I wanted so desperately to go to Japan and live? So much so that I asked my Uncle Cline to make me a pair of the wooden thonged sandals that used to be part of the normal attire there. That was an FYI for ya. Bethany is back from Brazil, BTW. Love and blessings on you...wished I was in your back pocket. We are hearing from God that 2006 should be the year of Kenya & Tanzania for Uncle Tony and I. We will trust God and watch Him provide. kisses and hugs and very low bows. Yours in HIM Aunt Pami

I just read that Tokyo was hit by a 6.0 earthquake Saturday. (I'm catching up on the news.) It closed the airport for a while. What did you hear about it?

Posted by SursumCorda on Sunday, July 24, 2005 at 11:33 pm
In addition to the earthquake, isn't there supposed to be a tropical cyclone heading that way? I suppose that probably wouldn't scare a Floridian, though.

Thanks for the posts everyone! I heard about the earthquake this morning, but I'm pretty out of the loop. I gave my email to the US Embassy in Tokyo and supposedly they send out email with warnings of such things. In any case, we're in good hands here and I'm sure they'd notify us if there was something out of the ordinary.

Glad you are there and all is well. I forgot to mention that being a "pointer"(the people that show you along the way) is a Japanese career goal. When you leave the hotel the employees will line up to wave goodbye. Remember to keep waving back until you are out of sight. H.L.

Janet! How wonderful it is to be able to hear from you! I just tried to blog under the HOT? article, but I think that my computer is frumpy and it didn't go through. Anyway - are you able to check your e-mail yet? Good for you - sounds like things are going well in Japan - and that you are learning quite a bit so far simply by observation. All of my best wishes to you - you're in my thoughts and prayers!
